Wolf River Systems › Nonconformance Tracking

Tracking nonconformances and corrective actions in a small shop.

When a part goes wrong, the fix is usually quick. What gets lost is the record: what happened, what it cost, who owns the follow-up, and whether it actually stayed fixed.

What a useful nonconformance record contains

You do not need a thick procedure to track problems well. You need the same handful of facts captured every time, in one place, by whoever finds the problem.

At minimum: the job and part, how many pieces were affected, what was wrong, where it was found, and what you did with the material (scrap, rework, use as is, return to vendor). Add a cost, even a rough one. Without a number, nobody can tell which problems matter.

The second half is the follow-up. If the same defect shows up twice, someone should be named to find out why, with a due date. A corrective action with no owner and no date is a wish.
